McPHERSON CENTER FOR ART & HISTORY
Santa Cruz , California
After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, when much of the surrounding area of downtown Santa Cruz was destroyed, William Turnbull Associates was retained by the Task Force of the McPherson Center for Art and History to design a new 22,000 square foot museum adjacent to the jail and renovate the 28,000 square foot former jail into a retail and office complex, thereby providing an income stream for the Museum. Design solution consisted of adding a new fourth story to remodeled jail and connecting the two structures with three story high atrium glazed on opposing sides and connecting to outdoor spaces to serve as a sculpture gardens and outdoor eating opportunities. Tomas Frank was in charge of this project and played significant role in its design, management and execution.
